100 Things I have Learned about Photography

This past week I stumbled upon Eric Kim’s list titled “100 things I have learned about photography”. It was such a great idea that I decided to do one myself. I have yet to read Kim’s full list as I didn’t want it to influence my own, but I will be going through his afterwards. I suggest you do the same.

It was hard at first, but once I got going, the list was fairly easy to complete. Some of the better items are listed near the end, so if you have the time, I suggest reading the entire list.

The Three Types of Photographs

In my opinion, there are 3 different types of photographs: Those you Find, those you Take, and those you Make.

How to Use Layer Masks

There are some things I have been doing for so long that it’s easy to forget there was a time I didn’t know about them. Layers Masks are one of those things. They have become so routine in my workflow that I could never go back to not using them. In this post I’ll explain what they are and how they are beneficial to your editing your images.

29 Different Kinds of Websites Every Photographer Should Know About

Let’s be honest, there are so many photography related websites that it is nearly impossible to create an all encompassing list. Instead we’ve created a list featuring different types of websites. We’ve done our best to give examples of each category using the most popular sites, or ones that we have had good experience with. While many of these websites could have been placed in multiple categories, we’ve organized them so that they are only listed once.

Protest SOPA and PIPA

I don’t support piracy, but SOPA and PIPA are not the answer. You can learn more by watching the following videos.

Beware of Penny Auction Sites

For the past few years Penny Auction sites have become relatively popular. You may have seen advertisements for them on websites through Google ads, or even commercials on television. In most cases they claim you can get merchandise at a fraction of the MSRP price. I won’t tell you whether or not you should participate on any of these sites, but I do want to make sure you understand how they work so that you are not misled or left disappointed.

365 Days of Clones

My brother, David Eger, recently completed his 365 days project in which he took a photograph of Star Wars Clone Troopers every single day for a year. In this post, we take a look back at some of the best photography themed images. For those who are interested, he will be continuing this project on a weekly basis. You can keep up to date by vising 365daysofclones or by joining [...]

Top 10 Posts of 2011

It’s hard to believe the year is coming to a close already. Here are the top 10 most popular posts from 2011.

Best Photos of 2011

There are many memorable photographs from this past year. We thought we would pay tribute to them by gathering a list of the best photographs from 2011. Here they are in no particular order.

Happy Holidays

It’s been an incredibly busy year. I want to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to support the site. I will be taking a well deserved break from PhotoWeeklyOnline for the next two weeks. PWOContests will continue to have weekly contests, so if you need a reason to get out shooting, feel free to join us.

Don’t forget, we are also giving away a Digital Camera. Take the time to enter if you haven’t already.

Next year I think I will be focusing more on Quality articles, as opposed to Quantity. I will also be spending more time promoting PWOContests.

All the best to you and your family. Please have a safe and happy holiday.

Weekly Photo Links

We`re not able to post every story on our website, so every Sunday, we will list some interesting photography related links.

Philips New iPad2 App Measures Your Heart Rate and Breathing

Philips new Vital Signs app is able to accurately diagnose your health using the forward facing camera on the iPad2. By watching small changes in your skin colour, the app is able to determine your heart rate. Similarly, it is able to determine your breathing rate by watching your chest movements. I believe we will be seeing a lot more programs like this in the near future as it will help diagnose patients without them having to go to a hospital or medical center.

Clever Canon Bag

Designspiration user Arbuzov found an image of this creative Canon bag which appears to be an advertisement for the Eos 500D. I’m assuming it is an old bag considering the 500D was released back in 2009. I wish they had taken the photo with the bag around someone’s neck, as that would have completed the illusion.

Afghanistan Viewed In a Different Light

Unfortunately, when most of us hear the name Afghanistan, we think of a worn torn country. Lukas & Salome Augustin, of Augustin Pictures, set out to show the country they love from a different perspective: one filled with love, joy and hope.

Zazzle See It Before You Print It

In case you don’t know, Zazzle is a website that lets users upload their photographs and/or artwork and apply them to many different types of merchandise in the hopes of selling their work. They’ve just released a new tool that allows you to preview posters, prints and wrapped canvas in your own surroundings before purchasing. Simply print up the Zazzle marker and place it on the wall where you want to hang the artwork. Once you take a photo of the location with the marker on the wall, upload the image to the Zazzle website where their internal software will apply any piece of art you would like to visualize. Neat huh?

The World's First Social Camera

Hipstamatic is ready to launch a new iPhone app which claims to be the world’s first social camera. How does it work? Essentially, you and friends (who must also have an iPhone and the same app) get to “share a roll of film” consisting of 24 photographs. Like traditional film, you can’t see your photographs until you have finished the roll. Once all 24 photographs have been exposed, the photos are revealed to all participants. The app, called Hipstamatic D-Series, is scheduled for launch today.

Underwater Housing for your iPhone

This yet to be named underwater camera housing is designed for an iPhone 4 or 4s. I was unaware there was demand for such a product, but considering how widespread the iPhone camera is being used, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. The handles are specially designed so that you don’t drop your phone underwater, and the housing is rated to 100 feet deep in salt water. They are currently trying to raise funds on Kickstarter where $399 will get you a limited edition Mocean Armor “Pro Kit”, assuming they meet their fundraising goal of course.

The Most Creative Stop Motion Video I Have Ever Seen

Steven Briand, aka BURAYAN, created this incredibly creative stop motion video using various paper sculptures. The reason why I think it’s so successful is because he takes advantage of the limitations of stop motion, thereby allowing him to create surprising yet believable transformations. What else can I say except it’s fantastic!

Pogo Stick Point of View

With the availability of portable cameras, people are continually recording themselves performing various activities. XPogo continues the trend with their video which shows the POV of someone hopping around on a pogo stick.
