The latest video diary from The Hobbit was released a few days ago.  In this behind the scenes video, Peter Jackson and crew explain the process of shooting in 3D. Since the RED Epic cameras they are using are relatively large, they cannot be placed side by side in the traditional method of filming 3D. Instead, one is mounted perpendicular to the other, and through use of a mirror, the two cameras are offset at the correct distance. If you are at all interested in the upcoming Hobbit movie, then this video is well worth the watch.
