The Onion, a website known for their satirical news, created quite the buzz recently when they posted a story about members of congress taking hostages at the Capitol building and demanding $12 trillion dollars (presumably to pay off the entire debt of the United States). While it’s not uncommon for people to confuse these stories as real, things got out of hand when they tweeted the following message:
BREAKING: Witnesses reporting screams and gunfire heard inside Capitol building.
Without any link to the article on their main site, many people thought the news was real. Word spread fast over twitter, and before you know it, people were calling the police to let them know about the hostage taking. Oops.
Brandishing shotguns and semiautomatic pistols, members of the 112th U.S. Congress took a class of visiting schoolchildren hostage today, barricading themselves inside the Capitol rotunda and demanding $12 trillion dollars in cash.
