10 Reasons Why You Should Join the 500px Community

In case you have been living under a rock, of if you are on the fence about starting up a portfolio on 500px, here are 10 good reasons why I think you should. Please note I have no affiliation with 500px, I am simply a happy member.

Pixel Hack Day

This coming weekend (November 19th-20th), 500px will host an event called Pixel Hack Day. The purpose of the event is to allow photographers and programmers to get together to create interesting visual applications which can be shown over the web, on mobile devices and desktop platforms. At the end of the two day event, prizes will be awarded to the best “hackers”. If you are interested in attending, there is still time to register. Just follow the link below.

500px iPad app

Hot off the heels of their unofficial iPhone app, comes 500px’s iPad app. I have already tested it out, and it is beautiful. Browsing photos has never been easier, or quicker. It looks like I will be spending many hours of my life browsing photographs using this app.

New 500px iPhone App

500px just announced a 3rd party app for the iPhone that will let you browse their site, vote on photographs, and add favourites. If you spend as much time as I do on 500px, then you will want to pick up this free app.

Blast From The Past! Old Photography Websites

Have you ever wondered what photography related websites looked like back when the internet was young? We did, so we put together the following screen captures for you.

Statistics of the 500 Most Popular Photographs on 500px

PhotoStatsApp put together an infographic using data from the top 500 photographs on 500px. It shows details such as what time of day most photos were taken, and technical settings such as ISO and average shutter speed. Hit the jump for the full image.

Flickr vs 500px

flickhundred is a website that randomly loads 2 photographs side by side: one from flickr and one from 500px. Obviously it was set up to compare the quality of photographs submitted by members of either site. I will say the comparison is a little unfair considering flickr is often used to upload casual photographs while 500px is mainly used to upload your best photographs.

500px Raises $525,000

Things are moving very quickly for 500px. The Toronto based website founded by Oleg Gutsol and Evgeny Tchebotarev grew by more than 60% in the last 30 days, and is now garnering 2.5 million visits per month. They’ve also just announced a $525,000 investment from three venture capital companies. As I mentioned earlier, I really like the design and functionality of the site. I can’t wait to see what they do with the additional funds.

500px

I recently found a website called 500 pixels. Although it has been around for quite some time, it was recently rebuilt from the ground up. It’s similar to 1x.com in terms of the quality of photographs, but without the rejection or frustration. You upload your best photos, and based on user interactions, they are graded. I don’t normally dedicate an entire post to promote a website, but I have really enjoyed my experience at 500px so far. I highly recommend visiting 500px.
