Sony To Boost Image Sensor Capacity by 50% Over 3 Years

Reuters is reporting that Sony will be boosting production at their Japan plant, and that they expect to increase capacity by 50% within two to three years. This is likely welcome news as Sony shares have shed approximately 50% of their value this year due to setbacks in Thailand as well as the rising cost of the Yen in Japan.

Sony Halts Production of the NEX-7 and Reflex Alpha 65

Sony has announced that they will be delaying the launch of the upcoming NEX 7 and Reflex Alpha 65 cameras “indefinitely”. The notice comes after record flooding in Thailand. Nikon has also provided an update, although they are still assessing the damages.

Thailand Flooding Affects 320 Japanese Companies, Including Canon, Nikon and Sony

It turns out that the flooding in Thailand has severely impacted the daily activities of hundreds of businesses, including 320 Japanese companies. Above you can see a chart which lists how Nikon, Sony and Canon have been affected by the natural disaster. The outlook for Nikon and Sony is particularly grim: “No prospect of recovery”. No word yet on how this will impact the availability of cameras and lenses.

Sony Two Worlds Commercial

Sony recently put together a video to promote their line of 3D products. If you haven’t seen the short film Nuit Blanche, then you will probably enjoy the commercial. If by chance you have seen the aforementioned short film, then you will probably be disappointed. Yes I understand artists need to make money, and I commend them for doing so, but compared to the original, this short lacks heart and originality.

Sony HD Experiment

Although this is an older commercial, it is one I have not seen before. In an effort to demonstrate the recording capabilities of their HD cameras, Sony went out of their way to fill the scene with visually stimulating objects.

Sony A77 Press Release

After months of speculation, Sony finally made a press release regarding their new translucent mirror cameras, the Sony A77 & A65. Speculations about the sensor size were accurate, as the A77 boasts a 24.3 megapixel sensor. The camera can shoot up to 12 fps (at full resolution!) due to the lack of an optical viewfinder, and it comes with a high resolution live view screen. Both cameras will be available in October of this year, with a MSRP of $1400 (body only).

First Look at the Sony A77

Late last week, a video with the Sony A77 popped up onto YouTube. Considering it is a new YouTube account, as well as the way the video was edited, many people believe it was intentionally “leaked” to get people excited about the new camera. See for yourself what it looks like in the video below.

P.S. Please don’t leave your cameras in a pile of sand. It’s not a good idea. lol

Sony NEX-7 Mockup?

Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting that this is an image of the upcoming Sony NEX-7, aimed at taking some of the market from Fujifilm’s X100. Users in the forum were quick to point out it is a render and not a photograph because the ON button says “NO”. Follow the link below to get more information on each of the highlighted areas.

Skateboarding As Viewed From 7 Angles At Once

What a fantastic idea: filming yourself performing an activity from 7 different angles at once. More importantly, it’s given Eli Stonberg a lot of attention for coming up with an original way of recording a skateboard video. I can think of a handful of activities that would be interesting to watch from various perspectives. Watch the video after the break if you think you can handle all of the movement.
